Flyers Reading & Writing Part 1 gives your child 15 words and 10 definitions. They read each definition and copy the matching word next to it. Ten questions test A2 vocabulary breadth and precise spelling — the copied word must be spelled exactly right to earn the mark.
Your child sees a list of 15 words and, separately, 10 one-sentence definitions.
They read each definition — 'This person flies planes.' — and find the word in the list that matches it.

Yes — but the word is printed right there in the list, so this is a copying discipline rather than a memory test. Train your child to copy letter by letter and then re-read the word once. Careless copying is the most common way to lose marks in this part.
Ten of the paper's 44 questions, making it one of the two longest parts of Flyers Reading & Writing, alongside Part 4. A confident, quick Part 1 banks a lot of marks early and leaves more of the 40 minutes for the writing-heavy parts at the end.
Single-sentence descriptions of Flyers-level vocabulary — people, places, objects, animals and activities. They follow recognisable frames such as 'This is a person who…' or 'You use this to…'. Practising vocabulary through definitions, rather than translation, is the most direct preparation for this part.
Forty minutes for 44 questions across seven parts, with no extra time for transferring answers. That works out at under a minute per question, so pace matters: the earlier matching and gap-fill parts should be done briskly to protect time for Part 7's story at the end.
