Flyers Reading & Writing Part 3 is a short text with gaps. Your child fills each gap with a word from a word box, then chooses the best title for the text. Six questions test reading comprehension, vocabulary in context, and understanding of the story as a whole.
Your child reads a short story that has words missing from it.
They pick the right word for each gap from a word box, which holds more words than they need.
They copy each chosen word into its gap.
The final question asks them to choose the best title for the whole story.
Read the whole story first, gaps and all — the title question at the end needs the big picture, not just the sentences with gaps.
Check word type before choosing: if the gap needs a verb, cross out the nouns in the word box straight away.
The word box holds more words than there are gaps, so a spare word at the end does not mean something went wrong.
For the title, ask what the whole story is about — a tempting wrong title often matches only the first sentence.
Word-box gap fills across Flyers-level texts — the same pick-the-word-that-fits skill Part 3 marks.
Trains sentence-level word choice and word order, so the right word-box option stands out at a glance.
After filling the gaps, your child chooses the best title for the story from a small set of options. It is the one question in the part that tests the whole text rather than a single sentence — the right title sums up the complete story, while wrong ones typically fit only part of it.
Yes — the word box contains more words than there are gaps, and the extras are distractors. Children who expect every word to be used often force a leftover word into a gap that was already correct. Practise treating spare words as normal, and checking each gap on its own merits.
Short stories about familiar, child-friendly topics — school, family, animals, outings, small adventures. The vocabulary comes from the Flyers wordlist, and the missing words are content words your child should recognise. Regular reading of simple English stories is the most natural preparation for both the gaps and the title question.
